Meaning

In this verse from the book of Genesis, Hamor is speaking to the people of the city and expressing the desire of his son Shechem to marry one of their daughters. By using the term "soul," Hamor is emphasizing the deep longing and affection that Shechem has for this particular young woman. In ancient cultures, marriage was often seen as a way to forge alliances between families or tribes, and it was common for parents to be involved in arranging marriages for their children. Hamor's request for the people to give their daughter to Shechem in marriage was likely a way to strengthen the relationship between his family and theirs. This verse gives us a glimpse into the customs and traditions surrounding marriage in ancient times and highlights the importance of family ties and alliances in those societies.
