Book of Genesis - Chapter 41 - Verse 16

41:16
And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

Meaning

When Joseph responded to Pharaoh with the words, "It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace," he was humbly acknowledging that he did not possess the wisdom or power to interpret Pharaoh's dreams on his own. Instead, Joseph attributed any insight or guidance he could offer to God. By recognizing that his abilities were limited and that true wisdom comes from a higher source, Joseph demonstrated his faith and reliance on God's divine guidance. This verse serves as a reminder for us to trust in God's wisdom and seek His guidance in times of uncertainty or difficulty. Just as Joseph trusted in God to provide Pharaoh with an answer of peace, we too can find comfort and reassurance in knowing that God is ultimately in control and will lead us to a place of peace and understanding.

Theological Overview

Joseph's response to Pharaoh's request for interpretation of his dreams provides a valuable lesson in humility and faith. By acknowledging that the ability to interpret dreams does not reside in himself, but comes from God, Joseph demonstrates his trust in the divine guidance and wisdom. The phrase "an answer of peace" further emphasizes Joseph's belief in God's ability to provide not just any answer, but one that brings harmony and resolution. This verse highlights the importance of recognizing that all gifts and talents ultimately come from God, and that we are mere vessels through which His will is accomplished. Joseph's humility in attributing his gift of dream interpretation to God serves as a powerful example for believers to always give credit to the Lord for any abilities or successes in their lives. It also reminds us to seek God's wisdom and guidance in all things, trusting that His answers will bring peace and resolution in every situation.
