Book of Genesis - Chapter 41 - Verse 2

41:2
And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow.

Meaning

Genesis 41:2 describes a dream that Pharaoh had, where he witnessed seven well-favored and fat-fleshed cows coming out of the river to graze in a meadow. This dream was interpreted by Joseph, who explained that the seven cows represented seven years of abundance that were to come in Egypt. The cows being well-favored and fat-fleshed symbolized the prosperity and abundance that the land would experience during this time. The cows coming out of the river could represent the Nile River, which was vital for the agriculture and economy of Egypt. The imagery of the cows grazing in a meadow signifies a season of plenty and prosperity for the people of Egypt. This dream was a foreshadowing of the upcoming years of plenty that would be followed by years of famine, as Joseph's interpretation revealed. Overall, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for times of abundance and times of scarcity, as life's circumstances can change unexpectedly.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse from Genesis 41:2 highlights the symbolism of the well-favoured and fat-fleshed cows that come up from the river to feed in the meadow. This scene is often seen as a foreshadowing of the famine prophesied by Joseph later in the chapter. The cows represent abundance and prosperity, as they are described as healthy and well-fed. They come up from the river, which can symbolize a source of life and sustenance. The number seven, often seen as a symbol of completeness and perfection in the Bible, further emphasizes the idea of abundance.

The term "well-favoured" can be translated as beautiful or handsome, indicating the physical attractiveness of the cows. "Fatfleshed" suggests that the cows were well-nourished and healthy, with ample reserves of fat. These descriptions convey a sense of richness and fertility, reinforcing the idea of abundance and prosperity that the cows symbolize in this verse.
