Book of Hebrews - Chapter 10 - Verse 16

10:16
This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

Meaning

This verse from the book of Hebrews in the Bible refers to a new covenant that God promised to make with his people. The covenant entails a deep transformation within believers, where God's laws will no longer be written on tablets of stone but instead will be inscribed into their very hearts and minds. This new covenant signifies a personal relationship with God, where his laws become internalized and guide one's thoughts and actions. This change represents a shift from external rules and regulations to an internal transformation where one's very nature is aligned with God's will. By having God's laws written on their hearts and minds, believers are called to live out their faith in a way that is authentic and deeply rooted in their relationship with God. As a result, this new covenant brings about a profound change in how believers relate to God and live out their faith.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of Hebrews 10:16 is that it speaks to the new covenant that God made with His people through Jesus Christ. In this verse, the writer of Hebrews quotes from Jeremiah 31:33 and reiterates the promise of God to write His laws on the hearts and minds of His people. This new covenant is contrasted with the old covenant of the Mosaic Law, which was written on tablets of stone. By placing His laws within the hearts and minds of believers, God signifies a personal and intimate relationship with His people. This interpretation highlights the transformative power of the gospel, as it is through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that Christians are able to live in obedience to God's commands. Word studies on "laws" and "hearts" in this verse further emphasize the internalizing and personalization of God's commands, suggesting a deep-seated conviction and commitment to live according to His will.
