Book of Hebrews - Chapter 7 - Verse 19

7:19
For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Hebrews highlights the limitations of the law in bringing about perfection. The verse underscores the idea that while the law provided guidance and structure for the people, it could not in itself bring about true perfection or complete reconciliation with God. However, the verse goes on to say that a better hope was brought in, which allowed for a closer relationship with God. This better hope is believed to refer to the coming of Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice on the cross provided the ultimate means for humanity to draw closer to God. Through faith in Jesus, believers are able to approach God with confidence and receive forgiveness and salvation. This verse serves as a reminder of the transformative power of faith and the importance of looking beyond the law to find true perfection and reconciliation with God.

Theological Overview

When looking at the theological interpretation of this verse, it is essential to recognize the significance of the law in the Old Testament. The law, referring to the Mosaic law given by God to the Israelites, served as a guide for righteous living but ultimately could not bring about perfection or salvation. It highlighted humanity's inability to perfectly adhere to God's standards. However, the verse goes on to introduce a contrast - the bringing in of a better hope. This better hope refers to Jesus Christ, who through His death and resurrection, fulfilled the requirements of the law and provided a way for humanity to be reconciled to God. As a result, believers are able to draw near to God through faith in Christ and experience a closeness and intimacy with Him that was not attainable under the law alone. This verse underscores the transformative power of Jesus' atoning sacrifice and the access believers now have to God's presence and grace.
