Book of Hebrews - Chapter 9 - Verse 6

9:6
Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.

Meaning

In this verse, the author of Hebrews is describing the rituals and practices conducted by the priests in the tabernacle. The tabernacle was a sacred tent used by the Israelites during their time in the wilderness as they journeyed from Egypt to the Promised Land. The priests were responsible for carrying out various duties inside the tabernacle, such as offering sacrifices, burning incense, and performing other religious ceremonies. The first tabernacle mentioned in the verse refers to the Holy Place, which contained the lampstand, the table of showbread, and the altar of incense. The priests would enter into this area regularly to carry out their service to God. This verse highlights the importance of the priests' role in mediating between the people and God, as their actions were seen as pleasing to Him and essential for maintaining the community's relationship with the divine. Through their service, the priests helped to uphold religious traditions and demonstrate their devotion to God.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the word "ordained" is significant in the theological interpretation as it implies a divine order or arrangement. The priests' duties were established and set up in accordance with God's instructions, highlighting the structured and ritualistic nature of the service in the tabernacle. The word "tabernacle" itself holds theological significance as it represents God's dwelling place among His people. The tabernacle was where God's presence resided, and the priests' service was vital in maintaining the sacred space. The phrase "accomplishing the service of God" emphasizes the importance of the priests' role in carrying out specific duties that were required to maintain the sanctity of the tabernacle. This verse underscores the sacredness and reverence with which the priests approached their responsibilities and highlights the significance of serving God in a manner that aligns with His divine order.
