Book of Isaiah - Chapter 19 - Verse 10

19:10
And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish.

Meaning

In this verse, the prophet Isaiah is warning those who engage in exploitative and unethical practices for their own gain. The act of creating sluices and ponds for fish may seem harmless on the surface, but if done with the intent to exploit and manipulate, it is condemned. The verse serves as a cautionary tale against those who engage in schemes that ultimately harm others. It is a reminder that those who seek to build their wealth or power by taking advantage of others will eventually face consequences and be "broken in the purposes thereof". This can be interpreted as a warning against the misuse of resources and the mistreatment of others for personal gain. It serves as a call to act with integrity and fairness in all endeavors, rather than engaging in deceitful practices that harm others.

Theological Overview

According to theological interpretation, this verse from the book of Isaiah can be understood as a warning against putting one's trust in earthly means rather than relying on God. The mention of those who make sluices and ponds for fish could symbolize those who engage in elaborate schemes and strategies to achieve their goals, only to have them come to nothing. The broken purposes could represent the futility and ultimate failure of human efforts when they are not aligned with God's will. This verse serves as a reminder to trust in God's guidance and wisdom rather than placing confidence in human ingenuity alone.
