Book of Isaiah - Chapter 21 - Verse 17

21:17
And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: for the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it.

Meaning

In this verse, it is predicted that the number of archers and mighty men from the children of Kedar will be diminished. The children of Kedar were descendants of Ishmael, and were known for their strength and skill in archery. The diminishing of their numbers signifies a decrease in their power and influence. This verse serves as a warning to those who rely solely on their own strength and abilities, reminding them that ultimately it is the will of the LORD God of Israel that prevails. It emphasizes the importance of aligning oneself with God's plan and relying on His guidance and protection rather than relying on one's own might. This verse can serve as a reminder to readers of the Bible that ultimately, God is in control and His word will always come to pass, regardless of the strength or skill of men.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the mention of the "archers" and "mighty men of the children of Kedar" carries significance in a theological interpretation. The archers were known for their skill and prowess in battle, often representing strength and power. The children of Kedar were a nomadic group descended from Ishmael, known for their expertise in archery and warfare. Therefore, the diminishing of these mighty men signifies a loss of strength and protection for the people of Kedar. The reference to the LORD God of Israel speaking this prophecy highlights His authority and power over the fate of nations. This verse serves as a reminder that even the most formidable warriors are subject to the will of God, who ultimately determines the outcome of battles and the destiny of His people. It emphasizes the importance of placing trust in God's sovereignty and seeking His guidance in times of difficulty and uncertainty.
