Book of Isaiah - Chapter 27 - Verse 10

27:10
Yet the defenced city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Isaiah describes a prophesy about the destruction and desolation of a once mighty city. The imagery used implies that the city was once prosperous and well-defended, but will now be left abandoned and in ruins. The mention of the calf feeding and lying down in the city suggests that it will become a place where even animals roam freely. The reference to consuming branches further emphasizes the idea of complete devastation and loss of civilization. This verse serves as a warning or a reminder of the consequences of turning away from righteousness and the potential downfall of even the most fortified cities. It is a powerful reminder of the impermanence of human accomplishments and the importance of staying vigilant in faith and righteousness.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse could be understood in the context of divine judgment. The imagery of a once thriving city now desolate and abandoned emphasizes the consequences of turning away from God. The fact that even the animals are left to roam freely and consume the vegetation highlights the complete desolation and abandonment of the city. This could serve as a warning to the people to turn back to God before it is too late. In terms of word studies, the term "defenced city" could be translated as a stronghold or fortified city, emphasizing the sense of security and protection that has now been lost. The mention of the calf feeding and lying down in the midst of the desolation could symbolize the reversal of roles, where even the once prosperous and powerful are now reduced to a state of vulnerability and dependence. Overall, this verse serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of forsaking God and the importance of remaining faithful.
