Book of Isaiah - Chapter 28 - Verse 15

28:15
Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

Meaning

In this verse, Isaiah is warning the people of Judah about the consequences of their sinful actions. The people have made a covenant with death and an agreement with hell, thinking that they are safe from harm. They have chosen to trust in lies and falsehoods for protection, rather than turning to God for guidance and salvation. By placing their trust in deception and sin, they believe they can escape the consequences of their actions. However, Isaiah is warning them that this false sense of security will not last. When the overflowing scourge passes through, it will not spare them. This verse serves as a cautionary reminder to rely on the truth of God's word and to seek refuge in Him, rather than in deception and sin.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Isaiah, the prophet denounces the people for their false sense of security in their covenant with death and agreement with hell. Through theological interpretation, it can be understood that the people were relying on deceit and lies to protect themselves from harm. By making lies their refuge and falsehood their hiding place, they believed they would be immune to the overflowing scourge that would pass through. This passage serves as a warning against putting trust in falsehood and highlights the consequences of turning away from God's truth. Through word studies, the terms "covenant with death", "agreement with hell", and "overflowing scourge" can provide deeper insights into the gravity of the people's actions and the impending judgment they faced for their unfaithfulness. Overall, this verse emphasizes the importance of honesty, integrity, and unwavering faith in God as the ultimate source of protection and salvation.
