Book of Isaiah - Chapter 43 - Verse 17

43:17
Which bringeth forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are quenched as tow.

Meaning

In this verse, the speaker is using vivid imagery to convey a powerful message about the futility of relying on human strength and power. The mention of chariots, horses, armies, and power symbolizes the might and prowess of human military forces. However, the verse goes on to emphasize the transient and temporary nature of human strength and domination. The imagery of these powerful forces lying down together, never to rise again, highlights the ultimate defeat and extinction of human power. The mention of being "quenched as tow" further emphasizes the idea of complete annihilation and extinguishing, likening human power to something easily consumed or snuffed out like a wisp of smoke. This verse serves as a reminder of the ultimate insignificance of human strength in the face of divine power and providence.
