Book of Isaiah - Chapter 59 - Verse 11

59:11
We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Isaiah captures the deep sense of despair and longing for justice and salvation experienced by the people of Israel. The comparison of the people to roaring bears and mourning doves conveys the intense emotions they are feeling, ranging from anger and frustration to sadness and lamentation. Despite their cries for judgment and salvation, they feel as though their pleas are going unheard, with no sign of relief in sight. The verse reflects the struggle of the Israelites as they face adversity and uncertainty, seeking hope and deliverance amidst their hardship. It serves as a reminder of the human experience of yearning for justice and salvation, even in times of darkness and despair.

Theological Overview

One of the key theological interpretations of this verse revolves around the imagery of bears and doves used to represent the state of the people. Bears are known for their strength and ferocity, symbolizing the people's ability to roar and make their voices heard in distress. On the other hand, doves are often associated with peace and gentleness, reflecting the people's sorrow and mourning. The juxtaposition of these two creatures conveys the complex emotions and struggles faced by the people in this context. Additionally, the verse highlights the longing for judgment and salvation, which seem out of reach. This yearning for justice and deliverance reflects a common theme throughout the Bible, where believers often find themselves in situations of despair and seek divine intervention. The distant nature of both judgment and salvation emphasizes the need for faith and patience in times of hardship, trusting that God will eventually come to their aid.
