Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 25 - Verse 7

25:7
Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt.

Meaning

These words from the Book of Jeremiah serve as a warning from the Lord to the people of Judah, who have turned away from Him and chosen to worship idols instead. Despite His repeated calls for them to return to Him, they have continued with their sinful ways, even going as far as to provoke God to anger with the works of their hands. This verse highlights the consequences of disobedience and the dangers of straying from God's path. The people's refusal to listen to God's commands and their actions have brought harm upon themselves, as they have chosen to prioritize their own desires over their relationship with the Lord. This serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of heeding God's word and following His will, as going against Him only leads to destruction and suffering in the end.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse delves into the relationship between God and His people. In this passage, the prophet Jeremiah is conveying the message from the Lord that the Israelites have not listened to Him, despite His repeated warnings and guidance. The phrase "that ye might provoke me to anger" highlights the consequences of their disobedience. The Lord, in His divine wisdom, is aware that their actions will lead to His anger. The reference to "the works of your hands" emphasizes the physical evidence of their idolatry and sin, created by their own hands. The phrase "to your own hurt" serves as a warning of the harm they will bring upon themselves by turning away from God. The underlying message is one of accountability and the need for repentance to avoid the inevitable consequences of disobedience. Through this verse, believers are reminded of the importance of heeding God's word and staying faithful to Him to avoid the pain and destruction that come from straying from His path.
