Meaning

Jeremiah, a prophet of the Lord, confronts Hananiah, another self-proclaimed prophet, in this verse. Hananiah had been spreading false prophecies, claiming that God had sent him to give the people hope and assurance of a swift victory over their enemies. However, Jeremiah rebukes Hananiah, stating that he is deceiving the people with lies. This verse serves as a warning against false prophets who lead people astray with their dishonest teachings. Jeremiah emphasizes the importance of discerning the true word of the Lord from deceitful messages, encouraging a discerning spirit among the people. By declaring that Hananiah is not sent by the Lord, Jeremiah seeks to protect the people from falling into the trap of false promises and trusting in lies. This confrontation highlights the need for individuals to test the spirits and seek the genuine truth in their spiritual leaders and teachings.
