Meaning

This verse from the book of Jeremiah serves as a warning from the Lord to the people who have committed various sins in Israel. The reference to committing villainy refers to their wicked actions and behavior that go against the teachings of God. The mention of committing adultery with their neighbors' wives highlights a betrayal of trust and a violation of the sanctity of marriage. Furthermore, speaking lying words in the name of the Lord, when He did not command them to do so, shows a disregard for the truth and a misuse of His name. The term "villany" refers to wicked or criminal behavior, highlighting the serious nature of the prophets' actions. The mention of adultery with their neighbors' wives symbolizes the violation of sacred bonds and betrayal of trust. The false prophets are further criticized for speaking lies in the name of the Lord, claiming to have divine authority when they are in fact spreading deceit.
