Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 34 - Verse 16

34:16
But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom he had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.

Meaning

In this verse, God is expressing his disappointment with the Israelites for turning away from him and dishonoring his name. The Israelites had been given freedom and had released their servants and handmaids, showing compassion and kindness. However, they then chose to go back on their word and brought these servants back into servitude, going against the principles of freedom and fairness. This act of exploitation and betrayal not only goes against God's laws but also reflects a disregard for justice and morality. By doing so, the Israelites not only disobeyed God's commandments but also acted in a selfish and unrighteous manner. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding one's word, treating others with respect and compassion, and honoring God's name through righteous actions.
