Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 36 - Verse 32

36:32
Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words.

Meaning

After Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, burned the first scroll containing Jeremiah's prophecies, Jeremiah was commanded by God to rewrite the words on a new scroll. Jeremiah enlisted the help of Baruch, the scribe, to assist him in transcribing the messages dictated by God. Baruch diligently recorded the words spoken by Jeremiah, ensuring that the prophecies that had been destroyed by the king were preserved for future generations. In addition to the original words, many similar messages were added to the new scroll, further emphasizing the importance of the prophecies and the need for the people of Judah to heed them. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of God's message and the unwavering commitment of His servants to ensure that His words are shared and preserved.

Theological Overview

Jeremiah's actions in taking another roll after King Jehoiakim burned the first one highlight his dedication to delivering God's message to the people of Judah. The fact that he entrusted Baruch to write down the words from his mouth demonstrates the importance of accurately recording and preserving the divine revelation for future generations. This passage also emphasizes the power of God's word, as even though the original scroll was destroyed, Jeremiah was able to reproduce its contents with even more added to them. The addition of "many like words" suggests that God's message is unchanging and that His truth cannot be destroyed or altered by human actions. By documenting these words, Jeremiah and Baruch ensured that God's message would continue to be proclaimed despite attempts to silence it. This verse serves as a reminder of the enduring power and authority of God's word, which remains steadfast even in the face of opposition and destruction.
