Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 50 - Verse 21

50:21
Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.

Meaning

This verse, found in Jeremiah 50:21, is a message from the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah. It is a call to action against the land of Merathaim and the inhabitants of Pekod. The Lord instructs Jeremiah to go up against them, waste and utterly destroy after them, according to all that He has commanded. This directive is a part of God's plan to bring judgment upon these specific nations. Merathaim and Pekod are believed to represent Babylon and its leaders, who have acted wickedly and opposed God. The destruction and punishment that God commands serve as a warning to all nations that go against His will. It is a demonstration of His power and justice, showing that those who defy Him will face consequences. As readers of the Bible, we can learn from this verse that God holds all nations accountable for their actions and that ultimately, His will shall prevail.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of the verse instructing to "Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee." is that it serves as a demonstration of God's judgment and justice. The Lord is commanding destruction upon these lands and their inhabitants as a punishment for their sins and disobedience. The word "waste" and "utterly destroy" indicate the severity of the judgment being pronounced. The theological significance lies in God's sovereignty and righteousness in dealing with those who have turned away from Him. It also highlights the importance of obedience to God's commandments, as the one being commanded is instructed to carry out all that the Lord has decreed. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of rebellion against God and the necessity of aligning oneself with His will.
