Book of John - Chapter 11 - Verse 24

11:24
Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Meaning

When Martha tells Jesus that she knows her brother Lazarus will rise again in the resurrection at the last day, she is referring to the Jewish belief in the resurrection of the dead. In Jewish tradition, it is believed that at the end of time, God will raise all the dead to judgment, and those who are deemed righteous will be granted eternal life. This belief is rooted in several Old Testament scriptures, such as Daniel 12:2 which speaks of the resurrection of the dead. Martha's statement shows her faith in the resurrection and her confidence in Jesus' power to bring it about. It also reflects her trust in the final judgment day when all will be made right and the faithful will be rewarded. Ultimately, Martha's words demonstrate her deep understanding of Jewish teachings and her belief in Jesus as the Messiah who has power over life and death.

Theological Overview

Martha's statement in John 11:24 reflects a common Jewish belief at the time regarding the resurrection. In Jewish theology, resurrection was often understood as a future event that would take place at the end of time, known as the last day. Martha's confession demonstrates her faith in the resurrection and her understanding of Jesus' power to bring about this final eschatological event. This verse also highlights Martha's theological knowledge and belief in key Jewish teachings. By recognizing the resurrection as a future event, Martha shows her anticipation of a time when all will be raised from the dead and judged. The phrase "at the last day" underscores the significance of this future resurrection in Jewish thought and emphasizes the hope and expectation of eternal life. Through Martha's response, we see her faith in Jesus' ability to bring about this future resurrection and her trust in his role as the one who has power over life and death.
