Book of John - Chapter 13 - Verse 16

13:16
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

Meaning

Jesus's statement in this verse emphasizes the idea of humility and servanthood. He is reminding his disciples that they should not consider themselves superior to him, their Lord and Teacher. In the same way, those who are sent by Jesus, whether it be to preach the gospel or to do good works in his name, should not see themselves as greater than Jesus, who sent them. This principle serves as a reminder to all believers that they are called to serve and follow the example of Jesus, who humbly served others and ultimately sacrificed himself for the salvation of humanity. By embracing humility and servanthood, Christians can fulfill their mission of spreading the gospel and bringing glory to God. This verse encourages believers to approach their service with humility and a willingness to submit to the authority and guidance of Jesus, recognizing that he is ultimately their Lord and Master.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the concept of humble servanthood, as demonstrated by Jesus in his earthly ministry. By declaring that the servant is not greater than his master, Jesus is setting an example for his disciples to follow. In a hierarchical society, such as the one in which Jesus lived, it was important to understand and respect the authority of those above you. He is instructing his followers to be humble and obedient, just as he himself submitted to the will of his Father. Additionally, Jesus speaks about the relationship between the sender and the one being sent, underscoring the idea that the authority of the sender is greater than that of the messenger. In this way, Jesus reinforces the idea of God's authority and the importance of obedience to Him. This verse serves as a powerful reminder to all believers to walk in humility and to recognize and honor the authority of God in their lives.
