Meaning

This verse from the book of John is a powerful message of peace and comfort from Jesus to his disciples. In this passage, Jesus is preparing his followers for his upcoming departure by assuring them of his continued presence with them through the gift of peace. The peace that Jesus offers is not like the superficial peace that the world gives, which is temporary and dependent on external circumstances. Instead, Jesus offers a deep and lasting peace that comes from a relationship with him. This peace is a supernatural gift that transcends understanding and can calm troubled hearts and dispel fear. Jesus encourages his disciples, and by extension all believers, to trust in him and not to let their hearts be troubled or afraid, knowing that his peace will sustain them in all circumstances. By meditating on this verse, followers of Jesus can draw strength and courage from the promise of his abiding peace.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of John, Jesus is reassuring his disciples before his departure, promising them peace that surpasses all understanding.
