16:18
They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

Meaning

When the people questioned Jesus about His statement regarding a little while, they were expressing confusion and uncertainty about what He meant. Jesus often spoke in metaphors and parables, which could be difficult for people to understand at times. In this particular verse, Jesus was alluding to His upcoming crucifixion and resurrection, but the people did not grasp the depth of His words. They were puzzled by the idea of a little while because they did not have the foresight or knowledge of what was to come. This reaction highlights the limitation of human understanding and the importance of having faith in God's plan, even when it may be difficult to comprehend. As readers of the Bible, we are encouraged to seek understanding through prayer, reflection, and studying the Word of God to deepen our comprehension of His teachings.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse "They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith," it is important to consider the context in which these words were spoken. This statement reflects the confusion and lack of understanding among Jesus' disciples regarding his impending departure. Jesus had been preparing his followers for his crucifixion and resurrection, but they struggled to grasp the significance of his words. The phrase "A little while" may have been perplexing to them, as they were likely hoping for a more immediate and clear explanation from Jesus. The disciples' response demonstrates their human limitations in fully comprehending the divine plan that was unfolding before them.
