Book of John - Chapter 17 - Verse 18

17:18
As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

Meaning

As you have sent me into the world, even so I have also sent them into the world. This verse, found in the book of John in the Bible, speaks to the mission and purpose of Jesus Christ as well as his followers. Jesus was sent by God into the world to proclaim the good news, demonstrate love and compassion, and ultimately offer salvation to all who believe in him. In the same way, he sends his followers, known as disciples, out into the world to continue his work and spread his message of hope and redemption. This verse underscores the importance of sharing the message of Christianity with others and living out one's faith in a way that reflects the teachings of Jesus. It challenges believers to go beyond the confines of their own communities and reach out to those who may not have heard the gospel. By following Jesus' example and sharing his love with others, Christians can fulfill their calling to be "sent" into the world just as he was.

Theological Overview

This verse, found in the Gospel of John (17:18), holds profound theological implications for Christian believers. In this verse, Jesus is speaking to God the Father, expressing that just as God had sent him into the world, he was also sending his disciples into the world. This reveals an important aspect of Christ's mission and the mission of all believers. The word "sent" in this context signifies a commissioning, an authorization to go forth with a specific purpose. Through this verse, Jesus is emphasizing the idea that believers are called to continue his work in the world, spreading the message of love, redemption, and salvation to all people. The theological interpretation of this verse underscores the importance of active participation in the mission of God, engaging in the world with the same spirit of love and compassion that Jesus exemplified during his time on earth. This verse serves as a reminder for believers to be ambassadors of Christ in the world, sharing his transformative message with others.
