Book of John - Chapter 20 - Verse 7

20:7
And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

Meaning

When Jesus rose from the dead, the disciples found the burial clothes that had been wrapped around his body lying neatly in the tomb. However, they also found the napkin that had been placed over his head not with the linen clothes, but in a separate place by itself. This seemingly small detail holds great significance in the Christian tradition.

Some theologians believe that the separate placement of the napkin symbolizes Jesus' resurrection as a separate and distinct event from his burial. Just as the napkin was set apart from the other burial cloths, Jesus' resurrection was a unique and extraordinary event that set him apart from all other religious figures.

Furthermore, in Jewish custom, a host would crumple the napkin if they were finished with their meal, but would neatly fold it if they intended to return. Therefore, the folded napkin in Jesus' tomb could symbolize that he is not finished, but will indeed return. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the miraculous resurrection of Jesus and the hope of his eventual return.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of the verse where Jesus' burial cloths were found in the empty tomb is that it symbolizes the completion of his work on earth. In Jewish burial customs, the head covering or napkin was a significant item used to signify that the person was not merely unconscious, but truly dead. When Jesus rose from the dead, the fact that the napkin was neatly folded and set apart from the other cloths indicates a deliberate and orderly act, possibly suggesting that Jesus was not merely a victim of circumstance, but in control of his own resurrection. Some scholars suggest that this act of folding the napkin was a symbol of Jesus' intention to return and fulfill his promises to his disciples. This attention to detail in the burial cloths could be seen as an affirmation of Jesus' divinity and the fulfillment of his mission on earth.
