Book of John - Chapter 5 - Verse 32

5:32
There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is referring to the testimony of John the Baptist, who bore witness to Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus acknowledges the validity of John's witness and the truth of his testimony about him. This demonstrates the importance of multiple witnesses in confirming the truth of a claim. In Jewish law, it was required to have at least two or three witnesses to establish a fact. By acknowledging John's testimony, Jesus is further affirming his identity and mission as the Son of God. This verse also emphasizes the collaborative nature of Jesus' ministry and the importance of building a community of believers who can testify to the truth of his message. By acknowledging the validity of John's witness, Jesus is also reinforcing the credibility of his own identity and teachings.

Theological Overview

When looking at the theological interpretation of the verse, "There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true," scholars often point to the concept of multiple witnesses in the Bible. In this particular verse, Jesus is speaking about the witness of John the Baptist, who testified about Him and His mission. By acknowledging the validity of John's witness, Jesus highlights the importance of receiving confirmation from others in matters of faith. This idea of multiple witnesses is also echoed in other parts of the Bible, such as in Deuteronomy 19:15, which states that "a matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses." This verse emphasizes the idea that truth is not established by a single witness but by the collaboration of multiple sources. In terms of word studies, the repetition of the word "witness" in various forms throughout the verse underscores the importance of testimony and verification in the context of Jesus' ministry.
