Book of John - Chapter 6 - Verse 34

6:34
Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

Meaning

When the people said to Jesus, "Lord, evermore give us this bread," they were expressing a desire for something more than just physical sustenance. In the preceding verses, Jesus had spoken about being the "bread of life" that came down from heaven to give life to the world. The people were starting to understand that Jesus was offering them more than just physical bread to satisfy their hunger. They were beginning to grasp the spiritual significance of his words and were eager to receive the eternal nourishment that only he could provide. By asking for this bread, they were acknowledging their need for a deeper, more meaningful sustenance that could only come from a relationship with Jesus.

Theological Overview

When the crowd of people asked Jesus to give them the bread that would satisfy them forever, they were referring to the physical bread they had just received from Him. However, Jesus used this opportunity to teach them a deeper spiritual truth. In the theological interpretation of this verse, the word "bread" symbolizes the spiritual nourishment that Jesus offers to all who believe in Him. Jesus is the living bread that came down from heaven to give eternal life to those who partake of Him. This verse highlights the importance of seeking spiritual sustenance from Jesus, who is the source of true fulfillment and everlasting life.
