Book of Joshua - Chapter 13 - Verse 13

13:13
Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

Meaning

During the time of the Israelites, the Geshurites and the Maachathites were not fully driven out from the region, as commanded by God. This failure to completely expel these people led to them living among the Israelites until the time the text was written, which suggests a lapse in obedience to God's instructions. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of not following God's commands entirely. It highlights the importance of complete obedience to God's will and the potential problems that can arise when His instructions are not fully carried out. The presence of these neighboring tribes among the Israelites may have resulted in cultural mixing and potential conflicts, which could have been avoided if God's commands had been strictly adhered to. Overall, this passage serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of obedience and the consequences of incomplete adherence to God's will.

Theological Overview

Despite the conquests and victories of the children of Israel as they entered the Promised Land, there were certain groups of people that they did not fully drive out, as mentioned in this verse from the book of Joshua. The Geshurites and the Maachathites were two of these groups that the Israelites failed to expel completely. This lack of thoroughness in obeying God's commands led to these people living among the Israelites, which was against God's plan for His chosen nation. The presence of these remnants of the previous inhabitants serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of fully following God's instructions. Although the Israelites had experienced numerous successes, this verse highlights a moment of failure and serves as a lesson for future generations about the importance of complete obedience to God's will.
