Book of Joshua - Chapter 13 - Verse 6

13:6
All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Joshua illustrates the Lord's command to Joshua to drive out all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephothmaim and all the Sidonians, and to divide the land by lot to the Israelites as their inheritance. The Lord had promised the Israelites the land of Canaan as their inheritance, and this verse shows the fulfillment of that promise through the conquest of the land. By driving out the current inhabitants, God was preparing the land for His chosen people, the Israelites, to inherit. The process of dividing the land by lot was a fair and just way to allocate the land among the tribes of Israel. It ensured that each tribe received their portion as determined by the Lord, fulfilling the promise given to their ancestors. This verse reminds readers of God's faithfulness to His people and His commitment to provide for them according to His divine plan.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the theme of divine guidance and provision for the people of Israel. The mention of driving out the inhabitants of the hill country and dividing the land by lot emphasizes God's promise to give the Israelites the land of Canaan as their inheritance. This demonstrates God's faithfulness in fulfilling his covenant with the Israelites, as he had promised this land to their forefathers. The act of dividing the land by lot also symbolizes God's sovereignty and control over the allocation of territories among his people. The mention of specific regions such as Lebanon, Misrephothmaim, and Sidonians underscores the extent of the land that God intended to grant to the Israelites. By following God's command to divide the land by lot, the Israelites were acknowledging their trust in God's guidance and provision for them as they settled in the promised land.
