Book of Joshua - Chapter 17 - Verse 6

17:6
Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons: and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.

Meaning

Within this verse, we see a unique situation within the tribe of Manasseh regarding inheritance. The daughters of Manasseh were granted a portion of inheritance among his sons, which was not the typical custom during that time period where inheritance was typically only passed down to male descendants. This shows a recognition of the rights and importance of daughters within the tribe, allowing them to share in the family inheritance.

On the other hand, the rest of Manasseh's sons received the land of Gilead as their inheritance. This division of land among the sons of Manasseh was a common practice in the ancient world, where inheritance was passed down through male heirs to maintain the family line and its possessions. The land of Gilead was a valuable and fertile region known for its abundance, which would have been a significant inheritance for the sons of Manasseh.

Overall, this verse highlights the importance of inheritance and land distribution within the tribe of Manasseh. It also sheds light on the unique circumstances surrounding the daughters of Manasseh receiving a share of the inheritance, as well as the allocation of the land of Gilead to the rest of Manasseh's sons. This serves as a reminder of the cultural and societal norms of ancient times, while also showcasing moments of exception and change within these traditions.
