Book of Joshua - Chapter 18 - Verse 9

18:9
And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven parts in a book, and came again to Joshua to the host at Shiloh.

Meaning

After conquering the land of Canaan, Joshua sent out men to survey and describe it. These men were tasked with dividing the land into seven parts, each part corresponding to a different tribe of Israel. The detailed descriptions of the land, including its cities, were recorded in a book. This information was crucial for the division of the land among the tribes of Israel, ensuring that each tribe received its rightful inheritance. The men then returned to Joshua, who was stationed at Shiloh with the rest of the Israelite army. Shiloh was an important religious center at the time, housing the Tabernacle where the Ark of the Covenant was located. By documenting the division of the land and bringing the information back to Joshua, the men were instrumental in fulfilling God's promise to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites.

Theological Overview

Within this particular verse, there are several theological interpretations and word studies that can shed light on its meaning. One possible interpretation is that the act of the men passing through the land and dividing it into seven parts symbolizes completeness or perfection, as the number seven often represents this in biblical numerology. The description of the land by cities into seven parts in a book also signifies a meticulous and organized documentation of their journey, perhaps to ensure accurate distribution of the land among the tribes of Israel. Additionally, the act of returning to Joshua at Shiloh highlights the importance of communication and collaboration within the community of believers. The word "described" can also be analyzed further to understand the depth of the men's observations and the methodical nature of their task. Overall, this verse conveys the meticulous planning and organization required in carrying out God's will, as well as the importance of unity and communication among believers in fulfilling His purposes.
