Book of Joshua - Chapter 21 - Verse 2

21:2
And they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.

Meaning

After the Israelites had settled in the land of Canaan, they gathered at Shiloh to speak to the leaders about the Lord's command to provide them with cities to dwell in. This verse emphasizes the importance of following the instructions given by the Lord through Moses. The Israelites recognized that it was their duty to obey and carry out the commands of God, which included not only worshipping Him but also taking care of their practical needs. By asking for cities with suburbs for their cattle, the Israelites were acknowledging the Lord's provision and seeking His blessing in their livelihood. This verse serves as a reminder of the Israelites' dependence on God for all aspects of their lives, both spiritual and material. It also highlights the importance of seeking guidance from God's chosen leaders and following His instructions to live according to His will.

Theological Overview

Shiloh, mentioned in this verse, was a significant location in biblical history. It was the place where the tabernacle was set up during the time of Joshua, following the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land. The fact that the people spoke at Shiloh implies that this was a central point for religious and legal matters in ancient Israel. By referencing the command of the LORD delivered through Moses, the speaker is invoking the authority of God's law in requesting cities to dwell in. The mention of suburbs for their cattle also reveals the practical concerns of the Israelites, as they needed space not just for themselves but also for their livestock. This passage highlights the importance of obedience to God's commands and the need for provision for both the people and their possessions. Through theological interpretation, we can see how the Israelites relied on God for their basic needs and trusted in His promises to provide for them in the Promised Land.
