21:34
And unto the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with her suburbs, and Kartah with her suburbs,

Meaning

Within this verse from the book of Joshua, Chapter 21, God is instructing Moses to allot certain territories to the families of the children of Merari, who are part of the tribe of Levi. The Levites were one of the twelve tribes of Israel, chosen by God to serve as priests and assist in the worship of God. In this specific verse, it mentions Jokneam and Kartah, which are two cities located within the territory of Zebulun. It was important for the Levites to be given towns and suburbs to live in, as they were not given a land inheritance like the other tribes of Israel. These towns and suburbs were provided to ensure that the Levites could fulfill their duties of serving in the tabernacle and teaching the people without the distraction of needing to work the land for sustenance. This verse highlights the meticulous planning and care that God provided for the Levites, showing his provision and faithfulness to those who serve him.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, there is a theological significance that can be explored through word studies. One word of interest is "Merari," who was one of the sons of Levi, a tribe designated for specific duties within the tabernacle. The families of Merari were responsible for the care of the heavier, more substantial parts of the tabernacle, such as the frames and bars. This division of labor among the Levites highlights the importance of each individual's role in serving God and the community. Additionally, the mention of the tribe of Zebulun in this verse signifies their contribution to supporting the Levites by providing cities and surrounding areas for their residence. Jokneam and Kartah were two such cities that were given to the Levites for their inheritance. This allocation of land underscores the interconnectedness and cooperation among the tribes of Israel in fulfilling their respective roles in accordance with God's commands.
