Book of Joshua - Chapter 21 - Verse 8

21:8
And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

Meaning

In this verse, the children of Israel are following the commandment of the Lord to give cities with their suburbs to the Levites by lot. The Levites were one of the twelve tribes of Israel, but they were not given a portion of land like the other tribes. Instead, they were given cities scattered throughout the land where they could live and serve as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle. The act of giving these cities by lot was a way of ensuring that the distribution of land was fair and just, as it was believed that the decision was ultimately in the hands of the Lord. This practice also reinforced the importance of obedience to God's commands and highlighted the special role of the Levites within the community. By carrying out this commandment, the children of Israel were demonstrating their trust in the Lord's guidance and their commitment to following his will.
