Book of Joshua - Chapter 6 - Verse 2

6:2
And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.

Meaning

When the Lord said unto Joshua, "See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour," He was assuring Joshua of His divine intervention and guidance in the upcoming battle. The city of Jericho was a formidable stronghold with strong defenses and skilled warriors, yet God promised that victory was already assured. This verse serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness and power to His people. By handing over Jericho and its inhabitants to Joshua, God was demonstrating His sovereignty over all things, including the circumstances of war. The assurance given to Joshua applies to all believers today, showing that when God makes a promise, He is faithful to fulfill it. Just as God equipped Joshua to conquer Jericho, He equips His followers with strength, courage, and wisdom to overcome any obstacle they may face. Therefore, this verse serves as an encouragement to trust in God's promises and rely on His guidance in all situations.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse from the book of Joshua highlights the theme of God's faithfulness and provision for His people. The promise made by the LORD to Joshua demonstrates His sovereignty and power over the enemies of Israel. This verse underscores the importance of trusting in God's promises and relying on His strength in times of battle and adversity.

A word study of the term "mighty men of valour" in this verse reveals that these individuals were not just strong physically, but also spiritually and mentally courageous. They were brave warriors who fought for their king and nation with unwavering determination. The mention of these mighty men serves to emphasize the formidable nature of the opposition that Joshua and the Israelites were up against. However, with God on their side, they could be assured of victory and success in their conquest of Jericho.
