Book of Judges - Chapter 16 - Verse 17

16:17
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

Meaning

Samson, a figure from the Bible, revealed to Delilah the secret of his strength. He explained that he had been a Nazarite dedicated to God from birth, which included following certain religious vows, such as never cutting his hair. Samson believed that his long hair was the source of his strength and connection to God. By disclosing this information to Delilah, he unwittingly allowed his enemies to weaken him by cutting off his hair. This act signified the loss of his relationship with God and his supernatural abilities, rendering him powerless. The story of Samson serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of revealing one's vulnerabilities to those who may seek to exploit them.

Theological Overview

Samson's declaration to Delilah in Judges 16:17 provides insight into the vow of a Nazarite which he had taken. The Nazarite vow was a special consecration to God, where an individual committed to abstain from certain activities and behaviors as an expression of devotion. One key aspect of the vow was to refrain from cutting one's hair, as seen in Samson's statement about his unshaven head symbolizing his dedication to God. By revealing this detail to Delilah, Samson demonstrated the significance of his vow and the source of his strength, which lay in his commitment to God. However, by betraying his vow and allowing his hair to be cut, Samson suffered the consequences of losing his strength, highlighting the importance of keeping one's promises and remaining faithful to God.
