Book of Judges - Chapter 16 - Verse 26

16:26
And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them.

Meaning

Samson, a powerful figure in the Bible known for his strength, found himself in a dire situation in this verse. He had been captured by the Philistines and was being led by a young boy to perform for them. However, in a moment of intuition, Samson asked the boy to let him feel the pillars of the house where they were gathered. By doing so, Samson was able to lean on the pillars for support, as he knew that they were crucial for the stability of the entire structure. This action foreshadowed the dramatic event that would soon unfold, where Samson used his strength to push down the pillars, collapsing the entire building and ultimately sacrificing his life to defeat his enemies. This verse serves as a reminder of Samson's unwavering faith and determination, as well as the power he possessed to fulfill his destiny as a hero of the Israelites.

Theological Overview

Within this verse from the book of Judges, Samson's actions can be interpreted as symbolic of his dependence on God's strength. By asking the young servant to guide him to the pillars of the temple, Samson is showcasing his physical weakness and need for support. This vulnerability can be seen as a reflection of Samson's spiritual journey, highlighting the consequences of his past mistakes and the importance of relying on God for guidance and strength. In a theological interpretation, this verse can also be seen as a reminder of the power of God to work through human instruments, even in moments of weakness or destruction. Samson's act of leaning on the pillars mirrors the idea of leaning on the foundation of God's truth and promises in times of trouble. Additionally, a word study of the term "lean upon" in this verse can further emphasize the concept of reliance and trust in God's provision, underscoring the importance of faith in navigating life's challenges.
