Book of Judges - Chapter 7 - Verse 19

7:19
So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.

Meaning

In this passage from the Book of Judges, Gideon and his men are described as approaching the enemy camp during the middle watch of the night. This specific timing is significant as it symbolizes a moment of surprise and stealth. The fact that they had just set the watch indicates that the guards may have been less alert, making it easier for Gideon and his men to advance towards the camp undetected. By blowing the trumpets and breaking the pitchers they were carrying, Gideon and his men created a loud noise and a sudden burst of light, causing confusion and panic among the enemy forces. This strategic maneuver ultimately led to the defeat of the Midianites, showcasing Gideon's clever tactics and the power of God working through him. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of timing, strategy, and faith in achieving victory even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see Gideon and his hundred men engaging in a strategic military action orchestrated by God. The blowing of trumpets and the breaking of pitchers symbolize the unleashing of God's power and victory in the midst of seeming weakness. The breaking of the pitchers represents the breaking of human limitations and reliance on man-made methods, relying instead on God's supernatural intervention. The sound of the trumpets signifies the proclamation of God's presence and victory. The timing of their approach, in the middle of the night during the changing of the guard, highlights God's perfect timing and the element of surprise in His deliverance. This passage emphasizes the importance of faith, obedience, and reliance on God's power rather than human strength in achieving victory against overwhelming odds.
