Book of Leviticus - Chapter 20 - Verse 27

20:27
A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.

Meaning

In this verse from the Bible, it is stated that individuals who practice witchcraft or sorcery, which includes having a familiar spirit or being a wizard, are to be put to death by stoning. This severe punishment was prescribed in ancient times to deter people from engaging in activities that were believed to involve communication with supernatural beings or powers outside of God. The act of stoning was a common method of execution in the Old Testament for various offenses, as it was seen as a way to purge evil from the community and uphold the laws of God. By enforcing such strict consequences for those who dabbled in witchcraft or sorcery, the moral and ethical standards of the society were maintained, and the people were encouraged to only seek guidance and power from God. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of following God’s commands and discerning between true spiritual practices and forbidden occult activities.
