Book of Leviticus - Chapter 26 - Verse 27

26:27
And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me;

Meaning

When God speaks of walking contrary to Him in this verse, He is referring to disobedience and rebellion against His commandments. Throughout the Bible, God sets forth guidelines and instructions for His people to follow in order to live in alignment with His will. However, when individuals choose to go against His teachings and live in a way that is contrary to His word, they are essentially turning away from His guidance and protection. This verse serves as a warning that there are consequences for failing to heed God's voice and choosing to live in defiance of His ways. It highlights the importance of listening to God's commands and striving to walk in obedience to Him, as doing otherwise can lead to separation from His presence and blessings.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse "And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me," it is essential to understand the context in which it is situated. This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Leviticus where God is laying out the consequences that the Israelites will face if they do not obey His commandments. The phrase "walk contrary unto me" signifies a deliberate choice to go against God's will and guidance. This disobedience leads to a state of opposition to God, resulting in adverse outcomes for the Israelites.

Moreover, a closer look at the word "contrary" in this verse can provide further insight into its significance. In Hebrew, the word used here is "qāṣar," which can also be translated as "oppose" or "act proudly." This sheds light on the nature of the disobedience being described – not just a simple disregard for God's commands, but a willful resistance and rebellion against His authority.

In sum, the theological interpretation and word study of this verse emphasize the importance of heeding God's instructions and walking in obedience to Him. Failure to do so results in a direct confrontation with God's will, leading to undesirable consequences for those who choose to go against His divine guidance.
