Book of Luke - Chapter 14 - Verse 10

14:10
But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

Meaning

This passage encourages humility and teaches the importance of not seeking glory or recognition for oneself. By choosing to sit in the lowest room, one demonstrates a humble and modest attitude, acknowledging the worthiness and importance of others above oneself. This act of humility is rewarded when the host, who originally invited the guest to sit in a lower position, praises them and invites them to move up to a higher place of honor. This teaches the value of modesty and the virtue of humility, highlighting the biblical principle that those who exalt themselves will be humbled, while those who humble themselves will be exalted. By following this teaching, one can experience true honor and respect, not through seeking it for oneself, but by recognizing and respecting others first. This verse reminds us to practice humility in our interactions with others, as true honor and respect come from a humble heart.
