Book of Luke - Chapter 15 - Verse 9

15:9
And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.

Meaning

This verse is part of a parable told by Jesus in the Bible, where he compares the kingdom of God to a woman who loses one of her ten silver coins. In this context, the lost coin represents a person who is lost in sin and separated from God. The woman's diligent search for the lost coin mirrors God's relentless pursuit of sinners. When she finally finds the lost coin, she is filled with joy and invites her friends and neighbors to rejoice with her. This signifies the joy that is experienced in heaven when a sinner repents and returns to God. It emphasizes the value that God places on each individual and the celebration that occurs in heaven when a lost soul is found. Through this parable, Jesus teaches his followers the importance of seeking out the lost and rejoicing in their return to God.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse is that it reflects the divine joy of God in the recovery of lost souls. The woman in the parable represents God who searches diligently for those who are astray and rejoices greatly when they are found. This demonstrates God's unconditional love and desire for all to be saved. The act of calling friends and neighbors to share in the rejoicing emphasizes the communal nature of Christianity, where believers are encouraged to celebrate the salvation and restoration of others. Additionally, the concept of losing and finding can also be seen as a metaphor for repentance and redemption, highlighting the forgiveness and grace that God offers to those who repent and turn back to Him.
