Book of Luke - Chapter 16 - Verse 15

16:15
And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

Meaning

These words spoken by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke serve as a cautionary message about the dangers of seeking validation and approval from others rather than God. In this verse, Jesus is addressing the Pharisees, who were known for their outward displays of righteousness and piety. However, Jesus condemns their behavior, warning that while they may appear righteous in the eyes of men, God sees beyond their actions and into their hearts. Jesus explains that what may be highly valued in human society, such as wealth, status, and self-righteousness, may actually be detestable to God. This verse reminds us that true righteousness comes from a pure heart and genuine faith, rather than seeking to impress and gain approval from others. It serves as a reminder to prioritize our relationship with God above all else, as He alone sees and knows our true intentions.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is warning his disciples about the danger of seeking approval from men rather than from God. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the importance of true heart condition over outward appearances. Jesus rebukes those who justify themselves before men, as God looks beyond outward actions and sees the intentions of the heart. The word "highly esteemed" in this context holds significant meaning, signifying the things that society values and considers important may not align with God's standards. This verse serves as a reminder to prioritize God's approval over the fleeting approval of men, highlighting the importance of living with integrity and authenticity before God.
