Book of Luke - Chapter 18 - Verse 21

18:21
And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.

Meaning

When the rich young ruler tells Jesus, "All these have I kept from my youth up," he is referring to the commandments that Jesus lists - do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself. The young man is implying that he has followed these commandments diligently since he was a young boy. This statement reflects the young ruler's confidence in his own righteousness and obedience to the laws of God. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that despite his outward adherence to these commandments, the rich young ruler still lacks true humility and a genuine relationship with God. The verse serves as a reminder that following the letter of the law is not enough; true righteousness requires a transformation of the heart and a willingness to surrender everything to God.

Theological Overview

When the rich young ruler in Mark 10:20 states, "All these have I kept from my youth up," he is referring to the commandments of God that he believed he had faithfully followed. This declaration reflects his confidence in his own righteousness and adherence to the law. The theological interpretation of this verse raises questions about the ruler's understanding of the depth of God's commandments and the condition of his heart. It serves as a reminder that outward obedience does not necessarily indicate true spiritual maturity or genuine faith. The emphasis on external actions can sometimes lead to a sense of self-righteousness or reliance on one's own merit rather than on God's grace. A closer examination of the ruler's statement also prompts a reflection on the nature of human sinfulness and the need for humility and dependence on God for salvation. This verse underscores the importance of sincerity and humility before God, acknowledging our shortcomings and relying on His mercy and forgiveness for our salvation.
