Book of Luke - Chapter 20 - Verse 13

20:13
Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

Meaning

In this verse, the lord of the vineyard is contemplating the actions he should take as the caretaker of the vineyard. He is facing a dilemma as the workers of the vineyard have not shown the respect and reverence that is due to him. In a bid to rectify the situation, the lord decides to send his beloved son to the vineyard, hoping that the workers will recognize the son's authority and show him the reverence that they have failed to show to the lord of the vineyard. The sending of the son can be seen as a last attempt by the lord to appeal to the workers' sense of duty and respect. This verse symbolizes the ultimate act of grace and mercy by the lord, showing his willingness to give one last chance for redemption and reconciliation with the workers before taking harsher actions. It also serves as a foreshadowing of the sacrifices that would be made by the beloved son for the sake of the vineyard and its workers.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the lord of the vineyard sends his beloved son to the vineyard, hoping that the workers will show reverence towards him when they see him. This verse can be interpreted theologically in a few ways. One interpretation is that the beloved son symbolizes Jesus Christ, who was sent by God to Earth. The vineyard can represent the world, and the workers could represent the people living in it. By sending his son, the lord of the vineyard is giving the workers a chance to show respect and honor to the son, much like how God gave humanity the opportunity to reverence Jesus when he came to Earth. Through this theological lens, the verse highlights the importance of recognizing and honoring Jesus Christ as the beloved son of God.
