Book of Luke - Chapter 6 - Verse 38

6:38
Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Meaning

As explained in Luke 6:38, the verse emphasizes the power of giving and generosity. It teaches that when we give to others, whether it be our time, resources, or love, it will be returned to us in abundance. The imagery of a measure that is pressed down, shaken together, and running over, illustrates the idea that the blessings we receive will be overflowing and extravagant. The verse also warns that the measure we use to give to others will be the same measure that is used to give back to us. This highlights the importance of being generous and kind towards others, as it will ultimately determine the blessings we receive in return. Therefore, by practicing selflessness and giving to others, we can experience the fulfillment and abundance that comes from living a life of generosity.

Theological Overview

In the theological interpretation of this verse, the act of giving is seen as an essential aspect of Christian living. By giving generously, one not only helps others in need but also opens themselves up to receiving blessings in return. The phrase "good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over" embodies the idea that God's blessings will overflow in the lives of those who are generous in their giving. The concept of receiving back in the same measure as one gives emphasizes the reciprocal nature of giving and receiving. This verse highlights the importance of generosity and portrays it as a fundamental principle of the Christian faith. Through the act of giving, believers demonstrate their trust in God's provision and open themselves up to receiving His abundant blessings in return.
