Book of Luke - Chapter 9 - Verse 55

9:55
But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

Meaning

When Jesus rebuked his disciples for their harsh reaction to a Samaritan village rejecting Him, He was teaching them an important lesson about the nature of His kingdom. By telling them that they did not know what manner of spirit they were of, Jesus was pointing out that their response was not in line with the character of His ministry. The disciples were displaying a harsh, judgmental attitude, when Jesus came to show love, compassion, and forgiveness. This verse serves as a reminder for all believers to examine their own hearts and actions, making sure they are aligned with the spirit of Christ. It challenges us to approach others with kindness, understanding, and patience, rather than with criticism and condemnation. In a world full of division and conflict, this verse underscores the importance of reflecting the love and grace of Christ in all our interactions.

Theological Overview

When Jesus rebuked His disciples by saying, "Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of," He was highlighting their lack of understanding regarding the nature of their actions and attitudes. This statement serves as a theological interpretation of the verse, emphasizing the importance of being aware of our spiritual condition and the influence it has on our behavior. In this context, the word "spirit" can refer to the attitude or mindset that the disciples were exhibiting. Through a word study, we can see that the Greek word for "spirit" in this verse is "pneuma," which can also mean breath or wind. By using this specific term, Jesus may have been conveying the idea that the disciples were unaware of the source of their actions, which was not aligned with the teachings of Christ. This rebuke serves as a reminder for believers to be mindful of their spiritual condition and to ensure that their actions are in accordance with the teachings of Jesus.
