Book of Mark - Chapter 13 - Verse 11

13:11
But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is preparing his disciples for the challenges they will face in their ministry. He tells them not to worry about what to say when they are brought before authorities, as the Holy Spirit will give them the right words to speak at that moment. This highlights the importance of relying on God's guidance and wisdom in times of difficulty, rather than trying to rely solely on our own abilities. By trusting in the Holy Spirit to speak through them, the disciples can be assured that they will be given the words they need to effectively communicate their message and fulfill their mission. This verse serves as a reminder to all Christians that we can trust in God's provision and guidance, even in the face of uncertainty and obstacles.

Theological Overview

When considering the theological interpretation of the verse that instructs believers not to worry about what they will say when they are delivered up, but to trust in the Holy Spirit to speak through them, it is important to understand the profound trust and reliance on God being emphasized. This verse highlights the concept of divine inspiration and guidance, with the Holy Spirit acting as the speaker through the believer. By surrendering control and relying on the Spirit's wisdom and power, believers demonstrate their dependence on God's sovereignty and proclaim His truth with boldness and confidence. The notion of speaking in the moment without premeditation underscores the need for believers to cultivate a deep relationship with God, allowing His Spirit to work through them in times of trial and persecution. This verse challenges believers to trust in God's provision and to be vessels through which His message can be delivered effectively and powerfully to those who need to hear it.
