1:20
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

Meaning

When Joseph learned that his betrothed, Mary, was pregnant, he was understandably troubled. However, before he could take any action, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, reassuring him not to fear. The angel explained to Joseph that Mary's pregnancy was a result of the Holy Spirit's work, and that he should proceed with taking her as his wife. This verse from the Bible underscores the miraculous nature of Jesus' conception and emphasizes Joseph's role in the divine plan. By obeying the angel's message, Joseph not only demonstrated great faith and obedience, but also played a crucial part in fulfilling the prophecy of Jesus' birth as the descendant of David. The significance of this verse lies in its portrayal of Joseph as a righteous man who entrusted himself to God's will and played an essential role in the story of salvation.

Within this verse from the gospel of Matthew, there is a rich theological interpretation that can be derived from the angel's message to Joseph. The use of the phrase "son of David" is significant as it indicates Joseph's lineage and connection to the royal line of King David. This connection is essential in understanding the Messianic prophecy that Jesus would come from the lineage of David. Additionally, the message of the angel reassures Joseph that the child conceived in Mary is of the Holy Spirit, highlighting the divine nature of Jesus' birth. This emphasizes the unique role of the Holy Spirit in the incarnation of Jesus, illustrating the divine origin and significance of his birth.
