Book of Matthew - Chapter 9 - Verse 30

9:30
And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.

Meaning

When Jesus healed people or performed miracles, he often instructed them to keep the news to themselves. In this particular verse, Jesus had just healed two blind men, and after their eyes were opened, he strictly charged them not to tell anyone. This may seem puzzling at first, but there are a few reasons why Jesus may have given this command. One reason is that Jesus didn't want his miracles to overshadow his true message of repentance, salvation, and the coming kingdom of God. He also may have wanted to avoid stirring up unnecessary opposition from religious leaders and authorities before his appointed time to fulfill his mission on the cross. Additionally, Jesus understood the fickle nature of crowds, who often followed him for the wrong reasons, seeking miracles rather than true spiritual transformation. By requesting secrecy, Jesus may have been trying to protect the authenticity and impact of his ministry.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse where Jesus heals two blind men and instructs them to keep the miracle a secret, there are several key points to consider. One possible interpretation is that Jesus wanted to avoid drawing unnecessary attention to Himself and His miracles at that specific moment in His ministry. By instructing the blind men to keep the healing quiet, Jesus may have been trying to prevent a premature response from the crowds that could hinder His ultimate purpose and plan. Additionally, this act of secrecy could also be seen as a way to test the obedience and faithfulness of the healed individuals. Jesus often required those who witnessed His miracles to keep them private, as He knew that His time had not yet come for widespread recognition. From a word study perspective, the phrase "straitly charged" can be understood to mean that Jesus strongly urged or sternly warned the blind men to keep silent. This emphasizes the seriousness of His instruction and the importance of discretion in spreading news of the miraculous healing.
