Book of Numbers - Chapter 1 - Verse 51

1:51
And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

Meaning

This specific verse from the book of Numbers, chapter 1, verse 51, describes the process by which the tabernacle, a sacred structure used in Israelite worship, was to be moved and set up. The Levites were tasked with the responsibility of dismantling and transporting the tabernacle when the Israelite camp needed to be moved. Conversely, when the tabernacle was to be pitched or set up in a new location, the Levites were also responsible for this task. The severity of the instructions given is emphasized by the fact that any stranger who came near the tabernacle during this process would be put to death. This served as a strict measure to ensure that only those authorized to handle and transport the sacred items of the tabernacle were allowed to do so, preventing any unauthorized personnel from causing harm or desecrating these holy objects. Ultimately, this verse highlights the reverence and importance placed on the tabernacle and its contents within the Israelite community.
